No matter how exciting traveling, studying, and living abroad would be, it is natural sometimes to feel homesick. And particularly during the first few days into university life is when most students are likely to be hit by Homesickness.

“A recent study by the NUS (National Union of Students) reveals that almost 70% of freshers experience Homesickness within the first few weeks of joining University.”

Homesickness is quite a personal feeling, and not everyone seems to be comfortable talking about it. With that said, it is also perfectly OKAY to feel homesick; however, it is definitely not a relaxed and comfortable position to be in. So, to give you a helping hand, we’ve put together five tips for combating that longing for home.

1.  DO NOT spend too much time in your room:

It might be tempting to stay in your room away from the outside world in your little haven, but ‘DO NOT’ get carried away by that feeling. Hiding out in your room will only make the situation worse.

If you’re facing trouble in talking and interacting with other people, check out your University student societies wherein you can meet and engage with other people who are also on the same boat as you. Many colleges and universities like the University College London, University of Exeter, University of Leicester, etc., throw fresher events and gigs to help students adjust and connect with the university culture. And if you’re still not ready for social interaction, try indulging yourself in activities that you like- for example, go for a long walk, play football or get yourself into the nearest library and read your favorite book.

2. Choose accommodation according to what’s best for you:

Finding your perfect home also plays a very vital part in combating that longing for home. So whether you go for university halls of residence or opt for a private rented flat or an independent studio, or a shared en-suite, make sure that your Student accommodation ticks all your requirement boxes. Bluesky have partnered with “amberstudent” to get some discounts for our students for best accommodation options.

Bonus tips before choosing your ideal student accommodation:

  • Check those reviews and ratings.
  • Always try to visit accommodation property in person.
  • Check whether the accommodation befits your requirements.

3. Bring along your favorite home comforts:

Whether it is your favorite comforter or your morning coffee mug, or simply your treasured soft toy, make sure you bring along your favorite home comforts.

It is much easier to tackle Homesickness if you do something to make your new room feel more like your homeroom.

Staying away from home for the first time can surely get a bit complex sometimes,

so get things that can help you cheer up when you are in low spirits.

4. Keep in Touch (but not too much):

We know living away in a completely new country for the first time can be a hell of an experience. And we also understand how much you must be missing your room, home-cooked delicious meals, your common hangout spots, and your parents and friends. So, try and keep in touch with your parents and friends, either by merely messaging, calling, WhatsApp-ing, or face-timing them.

While at it, try not to get too much involved, which might aggravate the situation and make you feel the distance. Remember your objective and work on your college life here while still being in touch with your parents and friends.

5. Stay Positive:

Last but not least, work to keep yourself positive. I know it is way easier said than done but try to do things that would excite you, whether it is going on a shopping spree or heading out and exploring the neighborhood, or binge-watching THE 70’s SHOW, with your new roommates.

Try to keep a positive attitude, not only will it make you more approachable to people, but this will also help to keep your Homesickness at bay.
